Jan 14, 2023
Learning that you have termites in your home is bad news. The thought of these little pests gnawing at the structure of your home is enough to keep you up at night. But, it doesn’t have to. Alpha Pest Control, servicing metro Phoenix, can help you solve your problem with Arizona termites fast and effectively. We’ve been getting a lot of calls about termites in Arizona this winter so we wanted to answer some of the most common questions.
How do I know that have termites?
Subterranean termites are easily spotted by the mud tubes that they leave on your walls — usually near baseboards or the concrete foundation. You might notice a mud tube on your ceiling or even a spot of mud on your wall. Those are all signs that termites have moved in. Drywood termite damage is usually noticeable by a pile of what looks like dust on the ground.
Once we have a confirmed termite problem, how do you treat it? Do you treat the entire house or just the room where the problem is?
You treat subterranean termites by placing a liquid barrier around the exterior (stem) wall and any cracks in the foundation of the home.
Drywood termites are treated by placing product (usually by drilling small holes) and forcing the product in the wood galleys the termites live inside of.
At Alpha Pest Control, we are experienced in termites and can come up with a plan to treat them that best fits your time and budget. Not all termite exterminations need to encompass a full treatment. We will study your specific issue and come up with a treatment plan that will address your needs. You may need just a spot treatment, a treatment of your whole house or termite bait stations.
What types of termites live in Arizona?
The most common termites in Arizona are the subterranean and drywood termites.
Where do they come from?
Termites need moisture to survive. The subterranean live in the soil and move from there back and forth into the structure (like your home) via their mud tubes.
Drywood termites also need moisture but can live in the wood structure of the home without going to back to the soil, as long as there is enough moisture in the wood.
I have a brick house, can I get termites?
Yes, even brick homes get termites because homes will still have wood products in them such as wood floors, cabinets, trim around doors, windows, rafters, etc.
What kind of structural damage can termites cause?
Termites cause billions of dollars in damage every year. It is definitely not a problem that you can leave untreated. The damage will increase over time if left untreated. That can definitely cost you more money if you don’t do something as soon as you discover evidence of termites.
How long will treatment take usually?
The time varies depending on the scope of work. For an average home of 2000 sq. ft. you can expect it to take about 6 hours to treat.
Can you pretreat a home for termites?
The lots for all homes are pretreated for termites, but that protection doesn’t last forever. Also, if you are building an addition to your home, you can have the ground treated before the foundation is poured.
